How are you doing? Did you ever think this question would feel so very loaded?
There is undoubtedly a veil of melancholy that, at least for me, turns into a whole dang poncho of melancholy some days. And it can take everything in my power to find my bootstraps, and even more to pull myself up by them.
I’ve found that the things that help me dig out are tactile, visible and creative without forcing any of the above. Working with my body, touching things and moving things in small ways to create something new has been the difference and has given me purpose and made me feel proud...these practices are layered and that’s why I think they work.
So without further verbosity, here are the free mood boosters that most can accomplish alone or with a buddy while sheltering in place:
Rainbow your Closet-
I follow a lot of influencers who have monochrome closets and it’s just so beautiful, but there’s no way I could ever live there being as though my style sensibilities change so quickly. Your girl is fickle so I decided to rainbow my closet with the help of our old pal ROY G BIV. Take it away, ROY:
Restyle an Old Garment
I recently did this with a dress I found while rainbowing my closet. Take it out, try it on with new things. Belt it, tuck it, put a shirt on overtop, layer it. Find a way to see it in a new light and it’s like you got a new garment without spending a dime. It sometimes helps me to search for something similar in a catalog or magazine or even online to see how others are styling the piece as inspiration. This is good when I’m having a creative block that is fueling my harsh vibes.
Throw Stuff Out
I know that Marie Kondo beat me to this in the biggest way and you’re totally rolling your eyes at this suggestion, but seriously, throw out your shit. Or at the very least, pack it away and rotate it. Or create vignettes in specific spots and leave some room for the eye to rest, thus creating a restful atmosphere. My favorite is a nice clear countertop where most of the small appliances are stored until I’m ready to use them. Try it, you’ll like it! And if you don’t, pull out the stuff you put away and you’ll feel good to have it all back in your face. Win win!
Stretch
This one is always amazing to me because it does so much, can be personalized based on your body and gives you such peace and energy without a whole lot of effort. Lately I’ve been listening to calm playlists on Spotify (what’s up, Sweaters & Vanilla playlist) and stretching around in a way that feels comfortable (mostly things that open up my hips and stretch out my lower back). Dang it feels good to be a stretcher.
